Heinrich Carstens, a grade 10 pupil at Noordheuwel Hoërskool was part of a four-person team that recently came third at the SA Schools Adventure Racing Championships. The race was a gruelling event in the beautiful but mountainous Magoebaskloof area involving a total of 60km cycling and 20km running, rafting, pushcarts and orienteering. The day of the event dawned minus the warm weather that the Lowveld is known for. It was rainy, misty and icy cold and tough muddy conditions tested participants both physically and mentally.
“Completing the race was one of the hardest things I have ever done”, said Heinrich “my warrior training at JSSA paid off, giving me the physical fitness and mental strength to endure and finish the race”.
